We have had more men than women sign up so far, so ladies, get involved!! Along with a Men's team, we are going to choose 5 women to train for their chance at the "Olympic Dream" Fill out an application - it could be you...!
We have had an even mix of both experienced curlers and people who want a chance at the "Olympic Dream" and want to try the sport... lots of non-curling, athletic people have filled in an application. This could be their big chance at Olympic glory!
Tell your friends and share the website with them... The try outs are going to be very interesting and lots of fun for everyone... stay tuned for more info over the next few weeks...

You people are all on drugs if you think you'll have a shot at playing in the Olympics for Curling! I have been curling for 12 years and it is not as easy as you may think, sure you might get good enough to make a few good shots in 6 to 8 months, but you'll never be consistent enough and experienced enough to win a game against the top 10 teams in the nation!
This is a Good thing for curling but a joke thinking you'll have a shot at the Olympics with 6 to 8 months of training.
No bullshit!

I agree that holding tryouts in Fairbanks, Alaska could net you some excellent players. Give it a go, and you won't be disappointed.

I have to agree with some of the other posters here. Having curling tryouts with having some of them in Fairbanks is just crazy. Fairbanks is curling-central. Get up to Fairbanks, AK, it's definitely the place to go to find curlers.

Just as a note. I'm from Durham, NC and even I know Fairbanks is the place to go for curling.

I agree - curling is much harder and much more subtle than it looks! It's definitely not just about great shot making. Take this year's women's nationals for example - who ends up in the finals? The gals with the most experience: Teams McCormick and Lank. You might be able to train a front end in 6 months, but a skip? Maybe well enough to win an end or two, but if actual curling Olympians can't get by McCormick - no way will some totally new gals (trained on arena ice!) be able to do it. And the guys? Yikes! At least with women's it's basically sign-up and go. (And ok - I am jealous of the newbies who do get access to this training! Arena ice or not, full-time training would help my game!)

A good place to shoot for tryouts would be in Northern Minnesota.
Within an 80 mile radius you have 6 curling clubs and 35 sheets of curling ice...not to mention Bemidji is close by and has 6 more sheets AND A NICE CLUB...
hibbing- 7 sheets of ice/ 500 members
chisholm- 4 sheets of ice/ 100 members
duluth- 8 sheets of ice/ 700 members
eveleth- 8 sheets of ice/ 350 members
buhl- 4 sheets of ice/ 40 members
grand rapids- 4 sheets of ice/ 100 members
You want to talk curling HUB...THIS AREA IS THE CURLING HUB IN THE STATES....MN HAS MORE SHEETS OF ICE THAN WISCONSIN BUT FEWER CLUBS...I AM ALSO WILLING TO BET MN HAS MORE CURLERS TOO BUT THEY SAY WISCONSIN HAS MORE...I DOUBT IT WHEN ST. PAUL, DULUTH, AND HIBBING ALONE HAVE 2200 MEMBERS

For Curlers in the Cold try Fairbanks! I'm lobbying for Alaska, a great place to hold a tryout for this show. Exciting people living interesting lives unlike my home in sunny California (boring here). Reality TV is about how people live outside hollywood afterall so head up to Fairbanks, Alaska and lets see some 'real curlers' in this thing not fairweather southern 48 state folk!

I agree that there is no way that this team will make the Olympic team. It takes most Olympic curlers 25 years to get to the Olympics from the time they take up the sport.
I think Rockstar Curling is trying to demonstrate to America that it does take athleticism to curl and they are searching for a few Herb Washington's(a world class athelte that gets recruited for an elite level sports team for a sport where athleticism was previously questioned. Herb Washington was a world class sprinter who was recruited by the Oakland A's to be desiganted runner. Baseball was thought to be non-athletic before Herb took teh diamond.).

I have no doubts that a team that is put together over 6 months can compete at nationals. I took a team of me and some college buddies (some first year players) to some bonspiels and beat a couple teams that went to nationals. It's all about knowing your team, sticking to your strengths and playing to the other teams weaknesses. Now if this show were in Canada, I doubt we'd see them make it through the city/region/province let alone the brier.
Also, FYI: Curling was the most watched winter game on NBC last olympics, hence the reality tv show. Although I think it had more to do with the babes rather than the dudes.

Warren, how come it takes the average Olympian 25 years to make it to the Olympics when they take up the sports?
Second, what physical tests are being conducted at these tryouts?
Posted by: curler_man | March 10, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Curler man... if you're talking about brand new curlers then you're right, but it doesn't take 25 years of experience to win nationals or worlds. There are plenty of teams that have played, competed, and won the nationals and worlds w/o 25 years of experience. I would bet that a team of people with 10-15 years worth of experience each could compete, and if under the proper direction could win nationals and worlds...

Warren, what physical tests are being done that these tryouts? Do you know? Does anyone know?
Posted by: curler_man | March 11, 2008 at 04:38 PM
I hope there is not a push-up contest... I saw a skip at a bonspiel a few weeks ago doing push-ups under the scoreboard before the game...
Posted by: sweep | March 12, 2008 at 08:04 AM
I have no clue, curler man... your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they want to see if you can swing the rock over your head like Kevin Martin... btw if you don't already know the Brier is going on right now in Winnipeg. Alberta v. Ontario in the finals, should be a good one.
